Laker
13
By:
"Hairy Mick"
PERFORMANCE REVIEW
This is, without a doubt, the best recreational kayak I have ever paddled!
She is fast, surprisingly fast for a boat only 13 feet long. Maneuverability
is excellent yet she tracks straight and true. Weathercocking is minimal
to non - existent which is very rare in a short recreational kayak.
STABILITY
This boat has a shallow 'V" bottom so she may feel a little "tippy"
to those unaccustomed to such a hull design, at first. This is an illusion.
The paddler is actually sitting on or below the water line and the boat
is in reality, very stable. Most paddlers would very quickly become
accustomed to the feel of this boat and relish the liveliness and responsiveness.

I am 6' and 200 pounds. With the addition of foot braces and thigh
pads as displayed in my build thread, it truly is possible to wear this
boat. This enhances the joy of paddling such a fun boat many times over.
Laker is so, good, I took her out in small surf- loaded with fishing
gear just to see how she would do. She did very well indeed! The addition
of a quality skirt or spray deck and a water-tight hatch would qualify
this remarkable boat as a surf, or mild white water job!
I originally built my Laker as a "loaner" boat. One that
I could lend to my friends who wanted to come paddling with me. She
is now my favorite GP boat and I have a shed full of very good kayaks
and canoes.

My wife Robin, who is strictly a recreational paddler and who owns
two superb store bought boats has paddled my boat. She was so impressed
with it she has asked me to build her one just like it.

In summary, there is nothing not to like about this boat. It is easy
to build, very, very good to paddle and it impresses the heck out of
every one who sees or paddles it.
