UPDATE:

I attained the wood today from our local Lowes. Took me hours to dig out the seven 4x8 sheets, but I think it was worth it.

The lady at the counter kept calling it '1088' and is a 3 ply type 1 exterior glue A/B plywood.

The goal this week is to get the pieces cut out.

This will allow you to see the entire album of pictures that I have taken thus far and save some band width here. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/563998244XKatGT If that direct link doesn't work go here http://community.webshots.com/user/Canon4500 and ...

Hunter's TouringPirogueT

I started this a bit differently. Of course right? Since I've had difficulty finding good luan to use I decided to cut out a pattern using my directions first, then use the patterns and my router (and pattern bits) to cut out my actual canoe panels. I selected half inch MDF for my pattern material. ...

When it comes to building a canoe this was a frustrating morning for me. I went to 3 different places for some luann. The only 3 within a 45 minute drive to where I live. Lowes had the 5.2mm 'exterior grade glue' stuff but as I have previously posted before it pretty much looks like crap and unless ...

As a person who has made furniture I fully understand the difference in utilizing paint and or clear coats. However I just learned that epoxy will cloud over from the sun's rays, and have decided that I will aim for a varnish finish. IE I hope to build well enough to avoid having to paint the hull. ...

Finishing

So I have read about several methods of finishing, from painting to varnish to just leaving the epoxy alone.

Which is preferred? If the grain is even half way decent I'd just as soon leave it visable. But that's assuming I don't have any errors that I need to hide.

The locking joint thing came up because I have used them in furniture making. And perhaps after building one (or two?) with the butt joint I may attempt a locking joint just because I think it would give the boat a different look. And I would utilize a fiberglass splice as well, that only makes good...

I have no intentions of making any changes to Matt's plans. Not on this first project anyway. And when or IF I get to that point I will always run them by Matt for opinions.
No my questions were simply that. Thoughts that popped into my head that I couldn't answer for myself.

Additional Flooring?

Anyone ever added additional flooring on their bottom to add strength to the bottom? Or even the sides? Just something that crossed my mind. I know it could be done, and it would add weight to the over all project. If you did what would be the best method? Epoxy the added flooring in before you glas...
