Fabric Skins

Hello there, I know this is a stich n glue forum so I'm a bit off here with this question but it is a canoe question. I am making a very light frame canoe for my wife (she asked me for a stone age canoe) and the plan is to encase the cockpit framed area with a cage of bamboo and give the whole thing...

Re: TV 15-32 overdue post

Kevin, 6mm deck will do for a small boat with a 20mm or 25mm stiffener where you will grab her for hauling, as Matt says, Strength where you need it.

Coconut powder

Artists say that if you can really make a join line invisible then do it, and if you can't then make it really obvious. I recently found out that coconut shell powder makes your filleting material a rich very dark brown and that it contrasts wonderfully with epoxied marine plywood. I will be startin...

Re: DK Touring build question

You're right about the weight Tor, I recon she's pushing 50 KG by now but since we live only 15 meters from the beach its OK. I will check the final weight as soon as I can borrow some bathroom scales. I added a few more Pics this morning. We are up to the paint stage and really looking forward to g...

Re: Best Family Canoe?

Hello Nigel, I am in the final stages of building the DK Touring Canoe. I'm not much good at computer stuff but I am an imaginative woodworker. If you look at photobucket, user name derenaz, album name derenazcanoestuff, you will see what I'm up to. I am sanding (yummy-yummy) and painting at the mom...

Re: DK Touring build question

Tor, I am also modifying a DK 18 and I am also planning to put outriggers and sails (next winter) At the moment I have a very modified canoe for the summer. Thinking about it the other day I realised that there is not 1 single part that is "to spec". I have made her a bit shorter, narrower...

Re: DK 18 touring canoe

Hello Eugene, I am in the middle of building a DK Touring canoe and I have cut her in half for the same reasons. I also modified her a fair bit. If you can instruct me on how to post photo's I will show you the story. If you can give me a post address I can put the whole lot on disk and send them al...

Re: Dan's DK18

Hello Dan, İ also looked for stainless bits n pieces. İ had to go to Manila for SS wood screws. Later İ found every thing İ needed in solid brass in Cebu city. Sorry İ cant remember a specific place but Cebu,s engineering district isnt very big. Have you thought of using brass instead of SS ??. You ...

Re: Dan's DK18

Hi Dan, My thinking about a thicker central skeg is purely a mechanics story. The contacting area (base of the skeg to the hull) will be the deciding factor when you get shoved side ways by wave action and meet a rock, just there. Your skeg is the lowest part of the boat, so apart from better tracki...

Re: Maybe a good idea, maybe not.

Hello Jack, İve been thinking about the boyancy chambers, the builders foam and various other bits and pieces İve picked up on this forum. İf the chamber in bow n stern was left open at the top and the inside lined with cling film (stretch film - sani wrap) and the foam injected into the space. İn e...
