Re: Sabalo build finally underway!
Extremely tedious, but necessary. A dremel with a grinding drum on it comes in handy for cleaning up the fillets before putting the little patches of glass tape on, and then for going back over them to smooth out burs and bumps and such once the epoxy cures. The inside needs a good coating of epoxy,...

Re: Sabalo build finally underway!
Also, if you can, it is really easier to do the outside of the hull in 1 giant piece of glass. Lay it out and trim it around the edges, with a little overlap that you can grind off later. Then you have no seam to feather and fair out. Just plan for an afternoon of mixing epoxy and wetting glass. It ...

Re: Sabalo build finally underway!
This all looks so familiar to me... Good work! Yeah, the hull sags before you get the frames/stringers permanently in place. That's not anything to worry about. Once you have the inside work done, you might have to round off the frame corners due to the fillets and make minor adjustments to t...

Re: Sabalo build finally underway!
OK, I finally remembered to take the dimensions of the console I put on my boat. The width is 4.5 inches. The side panels are sort of trapezoidal in shape, but with the foreward edge taller than the back edge so that as the deck rises towards the seat, the console top angles slightly down. The top e...

Re: Sabalo build finally underway!
goanywhere, this is Ayjay. I got your email and backtracked it. Can't figure out how to reply to it, so I'll post here. I pretty much sort of invented my own measurement and used scrap pieces to build that little console on mine. I'll measure it and come back here and post approximate dimensions. Th...

Re: Texas Sabalo build
Well, it got a trip to the salt yesterday, and handled that fine. I managed to get a ~6 foot blacktip on a large shad, and fought it to yakside. The boat handled that well too, going out through the surf, and coming in as well. Granted, conditions were pretty nice, with only small breakers.

Re: Texas Sabalo build
I was thinking that with this boat, if you're going to completely glass it outside, you can probably use 1/8 okume, though that stuff can be difficult to get smooth curves with. The extra thickness of the glass should result in the same hull thickness as 3/16 okume sans glass.

Re: Texas Sabalo build
Love the boat. It's a great design. I wish I had used a bit tougher of a paint, but this stuff is easy to touch up at least. The Sabalo is a real winner of a craft. I put it upside down mostly because I haven't yet bought a set of the kayak cradles for my rack, but because of the flat decks, it is a...
