Surrey River trip

Post by Tor »

We camped on the banks of the Surrey river at Narrawong in Western Victoria. It's a great little spot but 5 hrs from the city so a bit far for the weekend. The trip on the river was a short paddle inland for a picnic

Five in a canoe...

once away from the campsite we had a very quiet and pleasant paddle, saw Koalas, a sea eagle and 100's of cormorants and herons  ... ok maybe a dozen or so then.

We stopped and had a snack about 5km up the river and a plastic yak paddled past, we exchanged nods of greeting and he lost control and ended up at 90 degrees to the bank in the weeds. It happened so fast, we had a quiet laugh.

on our return we did a little fishing (we tried trolling some handlines but there was too much weed around) all the girls caught their first ever fish, in he background you can see some of the rock damage (the white scratches) picked up during out Yarra paddle

and I caught tea (the Mullet that the girls caught were also cooked up and were quite tasty too)

One thing we did find which I assume is normal for a boat like this (i think I need to get some lessons) is it had a tendency to turn sideways to the breeze when we let the breeze do the work.

For a canoe with five people in it and water that low it does not look like the bottom of it took to much damage. Everyone in it looks like they had a darn good time and that replaces any scratches on the bottom of the canoe. :D
