Hello Morten,
Our small group of boatbuilders is looking for designs we can use to get more people here in country into boatbuilding. Your 12' Rowboat and 15' Dingy caught my eye as aside from being good looking are very low cost. I was wondering if sails might be added to either or both of them as this would be an addition attraction for people here.
BTW what is the hull speed of the 15' Dingy? This is not a planing hull I think but it does look fast.
Thanks in advance.
Sailing 12' Row or 15' Dingy?

Hello Louis,
Thank you for the nice words, I am glad you like the designs.
I would not recommend the 12' Rowboat for sail. The freeboard is not high enough for sail. I had the chance to try the rowboat Justinas has build the other day, and it is rowing real fine and I suspect it will be going really good with a 2-2.5 hp outboard as well.
You could add a sail to the 15' Dingy. The beam is limited, so therefore you would not be able to add a large sail area. Without having made any calculations my guess will be that a ketch rig would be fine. Regarding the speed for the dinghy please have a look at this post: http://jemwatercraft.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=126
You are right it is not a planning hull, but it will plane if the outboard is big enough.
There is another alternative since you are looking for a boat that would be able to carry sail. It is a design I have in my drawer right now, but it will be official released soon. I call the dinghy for Dinghy-Vee. The main particulars are:
L.O.A. = 3,600 m / 11' 10"
B.mld. = 1,230 m / 4'
Depth = 0,510 m / 1' 8"
Draft = 0,113 m / 4"
It is designed to be a multipurpose boat, being able to go by sail, outboard or oars. The plans are ready to ship, so if you would be interested in this design sent me an email, and I can sent you the download instruction.

Wow 21 knots! My wife will love to have one and it will be a good rescue boat while I learn not to capsize.
The Dingy-Vee looks interesting since our group is looking for a design that will be attractive to a wide audience, and of course low cost. Can you tell me the BOM so I can figure the cost? It can be much at 11' with 4' beam. The dimensions are another thing - it is certainly cartoppable.
[ADDED]
Wow Morten $17 for the Dingy 15 plans!? What a bargain! I just put in my order and am just waiting for the e-mail (yahoo has been slow lately).

Hello Louis,
Yes 21 knots is kind of wild but it is also with a large outboard, which I can't recommend for normal use.
The BOM for the Dinghy-Vee is like this:
Plywood 2440x1220 (8' x 4'):
3 sheets 6 mm (1/4")
2 sheets 9 mm (3/8")
Fibreglass:
58 m (63 yd) 100mm (4") glass fibre tape
Resin:
Epoxy total: 5 litre (1.3 gallon)
Wood flour:
2,3 kg (5 lbs.) filler

Thanks Mortsen. I roughly calculate it at about less than a month's salary for a starting professional with generous allowances for the mast, sail and oars which I assume are not covered. This is certainly low cost.
BTW, just in case you did not notice, I ordered the 15 Dingy. Your value proposition (plans+manuals+25% discount) was absolutely impossible to refuse. Now I have to resist getting other plans too.

Hello Louis,
Yes I noticed, thank you for your order, I hope you like the plans and manuals. And don't worry, you won't have to resist for long, the 25% discount is going to end soon
Please let me know if you would be interested in the plans for the 11' Dinghy-Vee.
BTW. Did you get in contact with Russell, the builder of the 12' Garvey flex?
