Well nuts verses bolt & nut

Post by dangermouse01 »

Just wondering, if for non-structural applications like rod holders and the hatch frames is there any advantage or dis-advantage to using well nuts instead of a nut & bolt (or screw).

Other than the obvious that you dont need to get behind it with a wrench.

The well nuts are vinyl (PVC) coated so they seal.

Could you trust them for attaching the carry handles?

Would flattening the prongs down on these:

And bonding them in from the back be any better, assuming they are made from either stainless or brass.

Guess I am just asking whats the "best" way for attaching small stuff.

Thanx..DM

Generally if you can reach, use a bolt and nylock nut.

I wouldn't use anything with prongs.

Well nuts with the rubber jacket are self-sealing. But some Marine Goop does just as good of a job.

Might help. Will definately broaden the response...I kinda asked JEM before. ....has anyone attempted to use Dzus Fastners or C-Lock Fastners in there Boat Building (S/S or Aluminum)? Looking for a "Quick Fastner" system for "semi"-structural Hull components. ...devil's makin' me do it....

What's your aircraft background? Dzus fasteners aren't standard boat tackle.
