Plywood Thickness

Post by neon14 »

I'm getting ready to purchase plywood for my Sasquatch 14 build. Would 1/8" plywood be to thin for this boat? I plan on using 4oz glass inside and out. Thanks

You're an experienced builder and paddler. So you know understand the limits of a hull.

She'll bump off logs and such ok but she won't be "bomb proof".

1/8" marine grade should get it done. Sasquatch has multi panels with multi seams so that adds some stiffness and strength. The plywood will feel "floppy" until you stitch it.

Mine was made from 1/8 th inch wood.
Just be careful when stitching it especially if you are using the copper wire since it will pull threw the wood if tighten to tight or I should say over tight. The normal tightness that we use when making boats will work without causing any problems. :D

Mine is the 14 and turned out at 30 pounds when done.

Found a place in Austin that sells 1/8" marine ply for 64 dollars a sheet. I forgot to ask what kind it was. Its a 250 mile round trip plus time. My other option is 3/16" luan. I used it on the paddle board and the bottom of the sabalo. I'm happy with it and both boats are rock solid. But I want to build a light boat. Anyone know of a reasonable place to buy 1/8" ply online?

I found mine at a specialty lumber store and not the box box ones. Look around for a shop that specializes in plywood or door skins. ( Door skins are 1/8th inch wood )
