Ice vs. Canoe

Post by LesForgue »

Who's paddled through skim ice?
How thick of ice can one break through without ice cutting into boat's bow material (plywood/fiberglass/epoxy)?
I'm thinking of launching Sunday Nov 11 on a lake which might have a skin of ice along shore or even the whole surface. I'm thinking no harm if less than half inch ice, but that is based on nothing, " I think, therefore I don't know".

1/2" of ice is substantial. I think the bigger issue is your ability to plow through with just paddling.

Thanks for the tip Matt. As it turned out it warmed up to mid forties and no ice on the water. In future I'll probably keep the canoe ashore when there's ice on the lake.
By the way Matt, I received several compliments on your Trapper design.
And I told them about JEM Watercraft.
Today was first time on the water. Next time probably will be April or May 2019. I'm sticking to small lakes until I get more skilled at paddling, then I'll try a river or two.
I'll update my builder log when I get photo posting figured out again.
The canoe is STILL not finished! Needs sanding & varnishing for UV protection.

Les,
This is my favorite time of tear to fish--but quickly found out the pirogue/canoe simply isn't heavy enough to go through much more than patches of skim ice. anxiously awaiting pictures. Here is a link that I printed to resize bulk pictures
