Merrimac vs Townsend

Post by Tree Frog »

Hi Matt.

I was originally thinking of building a simple pirogue, but, after looking at your plans, am in the process of changing my mind. I'm a first time builder looking for a canoe for my family (myself, my lovely and charming wife, and two young daughters). I envision leisurely paddles on lakes or relatively flat rivers (like the Yadkin or New)

I've looked at the study plans for the merrimac and teh townsend. Both seem appealing, but the merrimac seems like it would have a greater capacity.

Could you recommend one or the other? I realize that's like asking you to choose one kid over another...

Thanks in advance for your help.

Both will have about the same weight capacity.

I need to change the write up on the Townsend so it's easier to compare the two canoes.

Merrimac will maneuver a little better. Townsend will track a little better.

As far as reaching to the water to paddle, Merrimac will be easier.

Both will build the same.

Hope that helps!!
