Hi Matt, Thanks mate. She's pretty rough though. I made a lot of mistakes and the epoxy has highlighted them all!

The next one will be much better. I have learnt a lot about the game, and myself in the process. My wife, Robin reckons I am obsessed with building her. She doesn't even know about the next project - yet. Never mind, she is a good sport and puts up with a lot of my nonsense.

The Indonesion cedar (sirian)I used for wood flour has really stained the ply in places and glassing has really highlighted it.. Check it out

I ran into the same issues using mahogany wood flour and poplar plywood.

Live and learn.

Got the two top coats of epoxy on today. I'm realhappy with the finish. Will turn her over in a couple of days.

Looking at your supply of boats I think you definitely need about 6 or 7 more your just like me , not enough boats.

I cannot understand how you get any work done in such a clean and organized shop....... It is disgusting. Don't you know shops are supposed to look like a storm went thru it or someone set a bomb off in there.

You can only see the part I cleaned up for the boat building mate.

Got her off the strongback and tipped over. cleaned her up and applied fillets. Then to the epoxy and glass on the inside. Struck some problems here. Way too hot and the epoxy went off before I could properly finish.

Important lessons here. 1. Don't try to do too much at once. 2. Don't fibreglass in 36 degree C heat.

Got the stuff-ups pretty much repaired and back on track for finish coats this morning (hopefully)

I Called in at a local sawmill that specialises in Aust hardwood yesterday morning and asked about some suitable knot free timber for the gunwhales. The owner turned out to be a keen ammature boat builder and is very interested in my projects. On his recommendation I ordered some "spotted gum" strips 3/4 X 1inch. Spotted Gum is a type of Aust Eucalypt with amazing strength to weight and very good elasticity.

Last night, he rang to say the timber was ready. How good is that?

Get some small plastic cups; urine sample cups (new, of course) from a doctor's office are are good. If can't get them, use small, paper Dixie cups like are at a drinking fountain.

Using a measuring cup, carefully measure and pour one ounce of water into a cup, mark it. Also - MEASURE it with a ruler so you can replicate it easily. Now do the same with an ounce and a half of water.

Now, you can buy small, paper cups, easily mark them for 1 oz and 1 1/2 oz and use them for making smaller batches of epoxy. Make up a gaggle of pre-measured cups; they're a one-time use item.

Get larger, waxed, paper cups, 8 oz - 12 oz. Beer cups (used, of course) work well. Using a sharp knife or a razor knife, cut a sharp vee down into the lip at one point. Vee should be about 2" deep, and only about 1/16"-1/8" wide at the top. When you're laying epoxy and wiping it back off with the plastic squeegee blade, wipe the squeegee through this vee and it will deposit the excess epoxy into the cup.

I'll be there next week to help you use the new beer cups.
