Hi Bemm 52, This is what is going there.

Image

I am also going to make the mid-deck area an insulated storage area for keeping fish. I haven't decided on what kind of hatch I will put in there, these lexan hatches are heavy, so I think I might go for a standard 8" hatch there.

Things are really moving now. It seemed like an eternity gluing the shear clamps to the sub frames. But now I can get into actually building the boat!

Yea those little strips will drive you bonkers. I'm testing a newer deck support method using less strips. Thinking about doing a "Sabalo II" design sometime down the road to update a few things I've learned along the way. No big changes. Just a collection of little things to make it easier.

That will be good. Also, something you might think about for the next edition, I had to cut out some areas in the rear TW sub frame to allow for the spacers. I couldn't sit the frame properly on the seam because the spacers hit against the frame, so I had to hack out some bits to make room. Obviously it's no problem because it isn't seen and won't affect strength at all, but it's a bit of a pain to cut out bits after everything's assembled.

You might want to include an instruction to mark out where the stitches should go in that area before stitching. This is the sort of thing you learn by experience, but it's a trap for first timers.

By the way, that frame fits perfectly. The mid deck cooler will work a treat I think. :D

Some more pics of yesterday's effort. Gee there certainly is alot of work in these Sabalos, but I'm very happy with how it's going so far, for a newbie. I think there are a couple of things I would do different next time, such as work out the placement of the stitches in relation to the tank well frame cut-outs. As you can see I had to hack a bit away to make the frame fit snug.

I set up the deck panels to see how it would look. My wife came and had a look and wondered if I was going to leave her to sail around the world in this thing! It does look huge in my small carport.

The stern section. This is going to be a little fiddly to get right, but at least the panels finish flush with each other and the gaps aren't too big to fill. I'm glad I used the 3.2mm Oukume, it's nice and flexible and very forgiving if things don't line up exactly.

This is going to be my mid-deck coolbox/fish keeper. Thanks Matt for the dimensions of the forward panel for this. I intend to line it with styrofoam and glass it to make it totally water tight. I will need to install a drain plug on one side though to drain out melted ice, and to make it easy to clean out.

These two shots show where I needed to cut out some bits from the frame to make room for the stitches and spacers. Not too bad but a bit of a hack job. Good thing it's not in a 'public viewing' area.

This is the tacking of the cockpit area. I was going to just make small tacks but I decided to do most of the fillets to make it stronger. I left it till now to set up the cockpit because I was worried that it might be out of square, but it's almost perfect, about 5mm out between the two diagonals. For the fillets I just used my finger, I find that the tighter angles are best done this way. I need not have taped around the seams, the fillets are pretty neat and not as wide as I thought. I will finish off the fillets when I remove the stitches, and tape the seams.

Looks good, Goanywhere.
Is the ice/fish box between the cockpit and tankwell? Will it go right down to the hull? Where will it drain to? Into the hull, or out through the hull?
Good to see some modifications before I really get stuck into mine.
What are you going to do for rod storage?
Did you come up with anything for your centre console?
Cheers,
Chris

Yes the cooler is in the mid-deck area between the cockpit and the tankwell. I am going to try to find a drain plug that will fit flush with the hull and position it in the middle of the box to drain out from the side of the hull, through panel C. That way all I will need to do to drain it is to turn the yak on it's side a little.

For rod storage I will just use rod holders. I will probably be able to store most of my rods in the fore storage compartment when not in use and use rod holders when going out.

I still haven't come up with a design for the console. I will need to think about this a bit. I need to consider what I want to fit to it, where to fit my drink holder and I want to be able to access it from the forward compartment to run wires for a fish finder etc. Also I want to make sure that anything I fit to the front of the console doesn't interfere with the centre hatch lid. So much to think about, but not just yet. I have to think about the rudder, foot pedals, rod holder placement, where and how to fit the side handles etc. etc. etc. first. :?

Ok, I finished laying up the hull today, ready now for tacking. Looks like I might be glassing the hull next weekend if the weather warms up as predicted.

Goannywhere
here is a picture of the drain plug in SWMBO's Wadefish.............. Sabalo has plug in same chine but there was to much junk in garage to get a good shot of it
Image
If you lean a little on water tank floods
I'm going to replace rudder cables on Sabalo at weekend and will take some detailed photos of centre consol with tape measure for you...........I'd be considering under deck rod storage if you want it now........get much further in build and it gets harder, also have you spoken with Matt about reinforcment for outrigger beam attachments there will be a lot of stress here and it needs to be sussed out while you can still get at things
Cheers Paul

Thanks Bemm52, that's exactly what I want. Where did you get it? I expect any marine supplies store would have them.
