Ho Jack, You be a man after me own little heart.

Matt, What length are you thinking here?

I like the basic layout as it is. Maybe a little wider but that probably wouldn't be necessary and would make it even more difficult to paddle. The stern could be trimmed up a little but that might affect the stability and I don’t think you would gain much else. I like the idea of a movable seat. You could also stand on it for better viewing for sight fishing.

I had a small sail boat once that had a deck mounted spray rail. It was V shaped and was canted forward. When water came over the bow it would strike the rail and was quickly deflected off each side. The one pictured would only slow it down a little and the water would still end up in the boat. IMO.

Also some gunwale rub rail would help stiffen and deflect water as well. I realize this is only a sketch. The front area would be a good place to store stuff like vests, drift anchor, rain gear, what ever. But, I do want to keep it light so that I can load it into my truck. I am trying to avoid a trailer. I may need to make a dolly if I need to carry it any distance loaded with my gear. Especially if I put a motor of any kind on it.

My next question is, since the Iroquois has been built and this boat is similar in dimentions, how stable is the Iroquois to stand in?

This is currently 32" x 14'. Will carry 350 pounds with no trouble at all.

Now the one you and I spoke about is a little different. This one is in the "kicking ideas around" stage.

I'll let majority rulle on this one. I have a 31.5" kayak shaped similar and it paddles pretty easy.

Not exactly sure what you mean by "trimmed up". Elaborate?

Can adjust that easy enough.

Left that off in the sketch. But yes, gunwale is required.

The wider Iroquios was built. A breif review here: viewtopic.php?t=400&highlight=iroquois

Now this square stern idea should be just as stable as the bigger/wider version of the Iroquois because of the flat end.

I really like the "kicking ideas around" stage. Free-wheeling thoughts get drug outta the closet and aired. Some float, some sink. A free forum is one helluva piece of fertile ground.

I realize that these are preliminary sketches and details like rails have been left out. As far as trimming up the stern, never mind, I am going to go back to what I said earlier, I like the current layout just fine. If wider is possible then maybe 34" but, as you point out the square stern should contribute to stability. If no body else comes up with any great ideas by the end of next week we can talk about a deposit.
