Made more progress on the rudder. Stitched and started gluing the upper side panels.

Mounted the rudder. Started making the front deck. Rounded the front deck by laminating two layers of 3 mm plywood. Cut out template for the rear deck.

I didn't like the way the front deck turned out. It was too heavy and I decided that it should have more curvature at the front. I made this one with one layer of 3 mm plywood, cut grooves in the fore part of the deck to make the ply more flexible, filled grooves with epoxy/flour while held on a curved form, glassed the inside, and put in ribs to hold the shape. Started making the front hatch, and making nutplates for the front handle and sail mount.

Made gunnels for the cockpit area.

Added on to the transom.

Applied two coats of a mixture of epoxy, grahite powder, and colloidal silica on the bottom to provide a little protection from oyster reefs and other hazards. Then applied two coats of a mixture of epoxy, colloidal silica, and white pigment. Two coats with the graphite made the bottom as black as can be; however, with the white pigment, the bottom is still a little gray.

Started making a paddle shaft. Made it by gluing 4 mm plywood strips on top of an aluminum hex bar as a temporary form.

Started gluing the front deck on.

Finished gluing the front deck on. Cut out the front hatch. Then glassed the front deck inside and out.

Cut out the rear deck.

Looking good so far, CC. Have any pictures of the business end of that egg beater drive? What does it look like below the water line in the drive train area?

I had a Hobie Outback Kayak. The drive works very well. It lives up to all of their claims. I may never go back to a paddle only kayak again.

David, thanks again for taking the time out to meet me and my family and show off your Sabalo. I can see it now making 4 knots over to Shamrock Cove and making the early morning topwater run in the 30+ inchers. CA
