Tool for finalizing panels to the line

Post by confusedSea »

So belt sanders seem to be a common tool to use for finishing panels to the lines, but I have to admit that the idea of using a hand-held sander and getting it out of square seems counter-productive, especially if one was to stack multiple panels to sand them all at the same time. So I had been considering a oscillating spindle sander with a table to support the panels. But then I ran across this handy tool at Home Depot, which does the spindle sanding, but also has a drop-on oscillating belt sander attachment.

Seems like the perfect tool for us OCD types who would like to stack and finish multiple panels at the same time. Don't know whether there are equivalent tools out there for less cash...

I don't know if theres a cheaper one,but at that price i don't if i'd use it that much. Unless you plan on building 3 or 4 boats to make it pay for it self

Mate, You can do the same job quicker with a router table, good router and a pattern bit.

but it is a very good idea. at the price it is a bargain and would come in real handy for the "fiddly" bits. I have never seen a combination sander like that.

I used the disk on my sander which is similar to this

but it was hard to do the inside curves. The outside curves were no problem. I do like that sander you found and I think it would do a much better job.

I work at Sears part time and we have a similar sander there for as little cheaper. Right around $139 I believe (and then with discount :) I will check when I get back there. Great way to do it though!

This thread had bothered me a bit as I only have an orbital sander and did not want to buy too much new equipment, but I found a spokeshave, kept really sharp did fine on the panels for my Sasquatch 14-30. I did all 4 matching panels at once, clamped in a Black and Decker workmate.
Much cheaper than these machines.

These nice toys are certainly great to have, but not needed. Don't tell my wife that! :D
