Here's a trick little question...

If the beam is narrower how much lower would you need to sit to maintain the same stability?

As some have commented my balance is reasonable and I do sit high, although I have lowered my sitting position now I venture onto sheltered bays and estuaries.

I like the idea of a narrower (assuming easier paddling/faster) Southwind even if there is a capacity trade off but if there is a significant lowering of the seat to keep stability I'd like to see a slight lowering of the sides to maintain the paddling ease and reduce the knuckle wear. However I have had a wave or two over the front deck when punching through small swell, which the coming kept out of the boat so I'd like to keep that "feature"...

I'd also suggest that the deck should come as a 2 piece rather than 3 for ease of construction.

and what about a "sit on" insert/seat thingy so that it was self bailing.

Please do something soon Mick has too much spare time

Mate, I think my SW 17.9 is 28 inches wide and it is as stable as a house. The seat height in mine is around 7 inches above the floor.

My personal preference should I ever build a smaller Southwind would be even narrowr, probably in the 24 to 26 inch range.I think the boat at 27 -28 inches would be very stable with the seat 3 or 4 inches off the bottom.

Mick
