Pardon my ignorance, but what are shear clamps? I am still learning the lingo here. Are they batens that you glue to the edge of one panel that another panel will be glued to? I call these batens but maybe my terminology is off.
Maybe a list of terms for newbies could be helpful here.

Sheer camp is nothing more than a strip of lumber glued to the top edge of a gunwale. Sheer clamp is sort of a kayak term (for my purposes)... used to glue/mount the deck of a kayak onto the main hull of a kayak.

Just as a word of further explanation the word "sheer" refers to the line where the deck meets the hull. The timber strip that goes there helps hold the deck to this location hence the term sheer clamp.

Yep, got it! I was thinking that the strip would provide extra strength to prevent 'shearing' of the attached panel or deck from the underlying panel.
