Black Friday Preview: Sabalo 12

Post by jem »

If boat plans were a literary novel, a 12' SOT would be my white whale.

I can't tell you how hard I've fought to get this one just right. It's not the same as Scott's prototype Blue Fin 12. I doubt I'll ever publish those. It was perfect for Scott but I don't feel the plans would be a good fit for everyone. It had some custom features that would be hard to draw (Scott built from a kit) among other things. But a lot of that design is in this one. I started over probably 7 times to get it just right.

It's 12' x 30" and will hold 275 on board with no water coming up the scuppers. Hull weight will be 45-55 pounds depending on wood chosen. If someone did strip-stitch with red cedar, they might .... MIGHT ... get under 40. And before someone says it: Yes I'm playing with a wood strip SOT but that's several weeks away from being a set of plans for sale.

Somethings different from the 15' version (besides the length and width):
-A single scupper is used in each spot instead of 2. I think 2 is overkill.
-There's a scupper in the seat area.
-The footwell is wider to allow for installing a console. It's not part of plans but if they are easy to design. You will have to work around the single scupper but should be easy to do.
-The internal framing is a bit different to make assembly easier. It's still a SOT and will take time to do. But it has improved.

If I get really crazy, it might be for sale this weekend. I've spent my entire Saturday on it so far so I'm tired. But I want it up for our annual Black Friday sale.

I really like this one. Hope you do too.

Does the Mirage drivewell "leak" enough to be a scupper?

Thanks

Yes, you can eliminate the front scupper. However, you may want to reconfigure the slope of the floor if the drivewell is not against the bulkhead.

Its quite a big hole in the bottom of your boat.

I sloped the floor of my Wadefish back to it & did away with the front scuppers altogether.

Hi Matt, Forum members

New to the forum but thought it was time to chime in. I've been looking forward to Matt making this design available, and it definitely looks like it's going to be a great little fisher. I'm just going to go and google this "Black Friday" - hope it's soon.
Regards

Thanks Pete,
I knew it was large but wasn't sure how much it was taken up by the drive

Cheers
