TV 15-32 SOF

Post by woodman »

Well before long my strong back will be freed up and I will be starting skin on frame pirogue The frames will have a 19'' space between them with Matt's 3 additional frames he drew up for me..

On the internet I have found plenty of kayaks and canoes that have been skinned but unable to find a pirogue....I like to modify and design things so this will be a fun project...

This is what is tying up the strong back:

With enough forms laid out in a plan I would think the conversion would be an easy project ...can you guys picture a North Wind SOF.

I think you have a great looking rig started, I do think on the skin on frame there are some other things to consider.
You are so light if you build a high capacity hull like the Northwind it will be hard to paddle and blow around like a balloon on top of the water. My Northwind at 52 lbs and my 200 still begs for more weight to make her paddle at her best, These are just my opions.
Ron
I think this is why you see most sof kayaks built narrow.

Good point Ron....

On the TV I was thinking a tandem fishing rig..being my first build (back when.. over a year ago) was only a 14' tandem http://www.texaskayakfisherman.com/foru ... 1&t=151573

The frames are laid out on the keel stringer..and the outer chines are in place....

Where the outer stringers naturally land...the bow is 3'' longer than the plans but at the stern it is 11'' to long..

A pic. of the upper stringer clamped inplace from the stern end...It is going to take a little bending to get it over to the centerline...I will have to cut back the keel and bottom stringers...This makes for a fun challenge...
Image
I will sketch an outline of the stern on a pc of 1/4'' ply and stick it between the stringers to get an idea of where to cut them to length..
Image
On the canoe I just built the stringers get lashed to a pc. of 1/2'' ply..
And they landed naturally in-place onto the bow and stern pcs. without pinching them together.

The stern stringers sure take some pressure to squeeze them together...I will add a cross tie to the back frame to hold deck stringers...
