Stupid Newbie Filletting Question

Post by BigMal »

My apologies for the stupid newbie question, but should I be filletting both sides of a join?

When you do one side of the join, the epoxy glue goes right through (hense the recommended tape backing) so is it necessary to do it from both sides? Obviously filletting from both sides creates more mess to clean up.

The thickened epoxy does seep through both sides of the seam/joint. You want to ensure you have a smooth radius so the fiberglass can lay flat over/in those curves.

So on the interior, you create a fillet. On the exterior, you created a rounded angle.

On the inside I find it best to run a strip of masking tape along both sides of the join about 10mm away from it. Then run a bead of thickened epoxy along it and smooth it out with the back of a plastic spoon. This leaves a nice radius for the fibreglass cloth to adhere to.

Thanks; I think I have been confusing myself between welding/gluing and filletting.
