is 'treated' wood okay with epoxy?

Post by LesForgue »

for inner and outer gunnels I am considering getting some pine 3/16 x 1.5 x 8 lattice strips to laminate usng epoxy resin, but they are described as 'treated' and I wonder will the treating chemicals interfere with epoxy absoprtion and gluing?

Also don't know would these strips withstand the bends needed for JEM Trapper 15-38.
to facilitate bending, I would first attach the 3/16 thickness with epoxy and then laminate on another layer of the same. I would not put one butt joint exactly over another, kind of stagger them. (can't find any 16 foot available)

(somehwere in the printed matter that came with the plans Matt gives his recommendation for minimum gunnel size, I need to look it up, but if I recall correctly 3/16 inner plus 3/16 outer would be too skinny, reason I would double that by lamination.)

Thanks.

I know this post is old but I would like to say that if you go to any store that carries moldings like the crowns, chair rails, door casing etc, they will probably also carry untreated CLEAR (no knot) lattice. I use it in layers sometimes for gunnels. Never had a problem with it breaking on a bend on anything I've used it on. In fact you can find many clear pieces of dimensional lumber in the trim section that can be used in these boats like the 3/4x3/4 or the 1/2x3/4. Some of it is pricey but what isn't in boat building?
