BHC

The design was a custom request from a grandfather that wanted a large boat he could take his grandchildren out for a comfortable day of rowing. After the design was finalized, he proclaimed "That looks like one Big Honkin' Canoe!".

BHC

The program for this boat is efficient rowing with plenty of room for passengers. But it was to be very sea worth for when the rower ventured out into choppy water. The hull is symmetrical allowing for easy drawing and cutting of panels for assembly.

The sharp entry transitions to the "cheeked" out hull at midship to provide stability when at rest. The rounded bottom shape of the hull will make riding out rough water comfortable as well. The rocker will make the hull easily maneuverable.

Hand over hand rowing

Primary means of propulsion is rowing, but it can be used as a wide tandem for paddling.

Big Honkin Canoe

This canoe can be made from 4 sheets of 4' x 8' (1.2m x 2.4m) plywood.

There are no complicated scarfing techniques. Everything can be done by someone with average woodworking skills and tools.

This design can be built by a very careful first time builder, but you may want to consider building something small first. The long panels can be a handful if it's your first time building but if you have a reliable partner, it will be a fun project.

Cost:

For epoxy and fiberglass, starting price will be about $300 delivered in the United States depending on the brand and vendor you choose. This doesn't include items such as varnish, brushes, rollers, mixing sticks, gloves, etc.

For marine grade plywood, price will be about $200 if you pick it up yourself. Delivery cost of full sheets of plywood is expensive. If you think you want to have plywood shipped to you, contact us about a pre-cut plywood kit. We may be able to precut and deliver the panels cheaper than you can have full sheets of plywood shipped to you.

Labor:

The hull will required about 70-85 hours to complete. You can save about 10-15 hours with a precut kit. These times are rough estimates and will vary according to the skill of the builder. Please note these are "hands on" hours and do not include the time waiting for epoxy to cure.
