Cape Fear - Sit On Top
Nestled midway between New York and Florida along the southeastern coast of North Carolina, the Cape Fear Coast is a place of uncommon beauty and a nautical legacy that spans centuries. Our Cape Fear Sit On Top kayak was the first generation of our Sit On Top plans. The hull is exactly the same as our Cape Fear Sit-Inside version of plans. A Sit On Top kayak provides many features that paddlers enjoy. The hull is self bailing so if water is taken on, it quickly drains out. This feature makes the hull very safe since one doesn't have to worry about rolling, escaping from a spray skirt, or how to bail water out of the cockpit. Please Note: While SOT kayaks are very safe, they are no substitue for learning proper paddling skills, a PDF, or good judgement. The design leaves plenty of room for customization. A variety of hatches, rod holders, and storage are possible. While the Sit On Top version of the Cape Fear is easily assembled, we highly recommend building at least one other small boat first. What you'll learn will save on hull weight and material cost. Specifications Overall Length 15'6 4.75m Max. Beam 31" .78m Heights: Bow, Mid, Stern 14", 12", 12" 36, 31, 31cm Estimated weight* using 3/16" (4 mm) Okoume plywood 50-65 lbs. 29.5 k. Recommended weight on board. 130 - 500 lbs 59 - 227 k

For epoxy and fiberglass, starting price will be about $400 delivered in the United States depending on the brand and vendor you choose. This doesn't include items such as varnish, brushes, rollers, mixing sticks, gloves, etc.For marine grade plywood, price will be about $250 if you pick it up yourself. Delivery cost of full sheets of plywood is expensive. Please compare our pre-cut plywood kit price if you are considering having plywood delivered. Our precut kit price may be cheaper than what you'll pay for the full sheets and delivery. A builder who chooses to draw and cut out all the panels manually can save around $400 over the cost of CNC cut kit. However, drawing and cutting the multiple panels on this design will be time consuming and there will be a risk of error.

Labor:
Please Note: This is a multi-paneled hull and will require significantly more effort to assemble than some of our other designs. If you're a first-time builder, we highly recommend you consider completing a simpler project first. What you learn on the first project will allow you to build a better, lighter second project. The hull will required about 80-95 hours to complete. You can save about 10-15 hours with a precut kit. These times are rough estimates and will vary according to the skill of the builder. Please note these are "hands on" hours and do not include the time waiting for epoxy to cure.
