Re: Grant's TV

Gunnels and thwart are now stained and the first coat of Spar urethane is on and curing. That is some smelly stuff. I'd suggest a well ventilated area. I am thinking of taking her out this weekend and chasing some fish. I'll have to post some more pictures soon.

Re: Grant's TV

Chuck, I've been on the fence about painting it. If I'do it over I wouldn't have used cheap plywood and paid the extra money but who knew I could build a boat? It did give me fits with hull shape. This all started with getting some plans off the Internet. What a fun way to spend a few bucks. I am su...

Re: Grant's TV

So I got to see some photos and video of the first trip and noticed the bow was riding a bit high. Almost out of the water at the base. I may have to try sitting further forward. I also might try loading the boat with an additional 50lbs and see how it goes. I think it will quiet the handling down. ...

Re: Grant's TV

Thanks Matt for the plans. I am impressed with the speed. I've only ever paddled large canoes and this just hauls butt. I took her out and pointed the bow into the wind and wasn't really hindered. I would have been dying with a full sized canoe and not been able to do it. Turns are super easy. The b...

Historic day today. I officially have a boat. She's still rough around the edges and needs finishing but I took her for a spin.

Re: New construction method?

That was what I was thinking. I don't know what it is or where to get it but I think it might have merit.

Thwart attachment

I was wondering what the recommendation is for thwart attachment. I was thinking expoxying and two two inch stainless screws per side.

Re: New construction method?

Matt that sounds about right. It might work with foam like they make surf boards out of.

Re: Grant's TV

Gunnel #2 is on and curing. Had to redo the scarf joint as it was half dry and failed under its own weight while I was sanding on it. All is back on track now.

New construction method?

Matt, After building a boat I was thinking about a paddle board and how it might be really easily done. What if you had a laminated layers of foam board insulation and okume horizontally with the wood cut to dimension beforehand. The foam could be cut to match the wood shapes as theywould already pr...
