Australia Day 26/01/2012

Post by PiratePete »

I have been a bit quite on the site lately as I have been busy with the organising committee for this years attempt on the most skiers behind one boat world record.

http://skirecord.com/

I have been the organiser for the safety pick up boats & jet skis.

The old world record of 100 (set by Cairns and District Power Boat & Ski Club) had stood for 24 years. During that time five other groups from around the globe had tried unsuccessfully to break it. In 2010 we managed 114 Skiers behind one boat.

This year we set out again to see if we could increase our own record whilst the owners of the boat we used still had it as its on the market to be sold. They also were keen to see us set a higher record number that they even set up a set of propellers especially for the event to allow the motors to rev harder & get the turbos up onto boost. This made a big difference & this time it only took 25 seconds to pull 154 skiers from the water compared to 100 seconds in 2010 to get 124 out of the water.

As the head boat driver I got to run right down the middle of the run in behind the skiers. I have a GoPro camera & here is a couple links to some footage on Australia Day where we got 108 people to the end of the nautical mile & then on the 27th where we got 145 people to the line.

This is our last attempt as like I said the boat is about to be sold, we have sold all the ropes, skis etc .

Here is some footage of what I did on Australia Day

And when we finally beat our old record.

There is about 5 to 6 mins worth of footage in each.

Here is some footage from other members of the group.

We got a GoPro especially for this run. They are a magic little camera & the quality of footage is amasing.

We used over 8Km of rope, with a 94m boom.

The owners (http://www.worldheritagecruises.com.au/) wanted to get some more power on the take off & spent $8000 on re-pitching some old props. I have seen the video footage from the helm on both the 114 run in 2010 when we set the last record & then the 108 run after the props were changed. On the 114 run the engines were at idle at 500 rpm in what they called troll mode. Then knuckles to the dash & you could see the tachos climbing by ones & twos untul they reached about 900 rpm, too low for the turbos to work. On the 108 run the did the same thing in troll mode but when they went knuckles to the dash she just leapt out of the water & the tachos swung round to 1800 rpm onto the rev limiters (over 3000 hp) & the Capitan had to start backing off as the skiers were going too fast.

Here are the Eagles specs

That's awesome!!

Now you just need a really long and skinny canoe with enough paddlers to pull one skier for a different kind of record.

Thanks Pete,
No one would be able to call that a cheap trick. That was one expensive undertaking.
