DK18 - livewell in center thwart and casting deck out front?

Post by confusedSea »

To builders and designer:

Could you please comment on the concept of using the center thwart as a livewell (middle portion with sides left empty)? How bout mounting the pumps / plumbing / hull fittings in the sides/bottom in that general area?

What about the possibility of bridging the gap between the center and forward seats with a casting platform (removable)? Rod boxes along each side?

I guess my main questions are how these customizations would affect the Center of Gravity / trim of the boat? Obviously it will mean more weight carried forward.

I'm trying to look into building a boat that can be used for lake fishing as well as still retain the flexible seating for a pleasurable afternoon with the family.

Hi jtz,

I see no problem with your ideas for a bait well and casting plaform. I believe the front seat can easily be used as a casting platform with the addition of railings. It is one meter long, giving ample foot room. A bait well will add a little weight in the middle and that is the best place for additional weight. My outboard is only a 63 lb 8 hp two cycle Yamaha and the designer specifies using up to 20 hp so you could add more weight in the stern to alter trim with a larger engine.

Hello jtz,

Dan is right, the live bait well midship will not give any problems. The extra weight will be right where it should be, midship and low.

As with the casting platform it is a bit more problematic, since the weight will be added higher. How about adding a permanent floor piece between the forward and center seats? It will keep the weight lower and give more stability.
