Buccaneer Build - Predator

Post by David Kopera »

I decided to build a kayak for my grandson and asked what color he wanted. Being the avid outdoorsman that he is, at age 10, he said camo. The wheels started turning in my head on how to accomplish this.

It was easier than I thought, once I strolled through the hunting section of a local Wal-Mart. I found ground blind material in Real-Tree camo and it was printed on a light nylon mesh, not burlap like some I have seen. It went on great under the fiberglass, kind of all in one step.

Unfortunately, I did not take pictures as I was building, but I did take some recently as I was almost finished. I added a small keel to the bottom and used graphite on the bottom also. After seeing people using the small plastic kayaks who wasted much effort wiggling from side to side trying to keep straight, and the bottom seam had a bit of a gap to it(oops), I decided the keel would kill two birds with one stone. Add stability and keep the kayak staighter in the water, as well as help fill in the gap in the seam.
