Building JEM Trapper 15-38 with no center thwart.
I've heard of removable center thwarts / yokes for portage
But wondering about a strap tied abeam instead.
Anyone done that? Shoulder or tump? Please comment if so.
Thanks.
Btw I started this build in 2014 A.D. EDITED : No It was 2012, over six years ago!
expect to have it on the water next month.

I've seen straps used to portage. But the yolk is a structural part of the canoe and should not b omitted.

Double posted my reply. So I erased what was in this space.

Matt I do have the two thwarts you specify in the Trapper 15-38 documents. They are even somewhat wider & taller than your minimum 2" x 1", plus a big wooden cleat underneath. So I haven't omitted anything from the plans. The decks also exceed their specified minimum and they have cleats underneath too. It's just that neither thwart is close to midship so I'll be McGyvering (as my daughter calls it) a portaging aid. Since it will be easily removable I can experiment to find which type will be comfortable for me. I don't know what does my Trapper weigh but I do know it is heavier than I had hoped for. My next build probly will turn out much lighter since I won't be an epoxy rookie. Ah well an old guy needs his exercise.
