Is there any reason not to stain the exterior before glassing?

You should do it before applying fiberglass.

Keep in mind your epoxy might have an amber tint so test it on a scrap board. Apply the stain, let it dry, then apply epoxy over the stain to verify you'll get the color you want.

Thanks Matt. What are people referring to when they speak of spar varnish after they have already glassed the hull? Also, is it safe to remove the exterior fiberglass patches after the filleting process to stain before glassing?

Spar varnish provides UV protection to the cured epoxy. Un-protected expoy will degrade over time due to UV exposure, paint or varnish protects it.

Any stain should be applied to the wood panels before any epoxy stuff happens. Stain will not penetrate cured epoxy. So, if you stain the panels after epoxy any smudge or spot of epoxy that was on the panels will shown up as a light spot or blemish compared to the surrounding stained wood.

Once the fiberglass patch is on the wood is saturated with epoxy and wont take stain, even if you could get it off. I wouldn't attempt to remove them, or recommend it.

Another thing to note, TarHeel, is that those 20 guys come in from all over the world!

and don't just "feel" like 20 guy's are taking a personal interest in your boat.......it's not just a feeling, it's a fact.

We "all" take a personal interest in every boat being built on these forums.

This is one of the things that make Matt's boats so very special.
Even though a total novice is doing the building, He/She will end up with a proffesionaly built hull due to the amount of experiance and advice on offer here in these forums, as long as the builder is willing to ask the questions, no matter how silly they may may seem.

Just remember the old saying.... There are no stupid Questions, just stupid people.

My take on this has always been that the stupid people are the one's who think the question stupid...therefore they don't ask, and as a result, never get an answer, so they never find out how something should have been done.

Lots of us lose our innocence here, and gain knowledge in return. Each answer represents a slice of time from someones Life, the time it took them to learn the bit of advice so freely passed on. So, what occurs is, a collection of bits of time and slices of Life accumulate here. Pretty quick, we're gonna assemble them into a whole person just to see what he looks like.
