I believe it might be a youngish female Black Bittern Ixobrychus flavicollis

I think it looks like a green heron with its head pulled back close to its body.

Aren't you in OZ? Not sure if you get the Green there. It might be a Green-backed Heron.

Yes I have to agree, the markings are more similar..... particularly on the wings
