Voila:!!!!!!!!!!!!.........6.9 square metres.

Just proves you should look outside the square before you get bogged down with details.

Well, the Paulownia has been brought and duly cut into strips.

Extension to my 16' x 2' table to be made tomorrow or the next day.

Then let the building/gluing commence, probably Thursday or Friday.

Well, have cut out all the panel drawings in the full size plans. Now have 18 pieces of paper. Went to start turning them into 6 pieces, done the first 3 to make #1 panel, done the QA2 measure and it's 10 mm short. Can't see where the error is yet, so will sleep on it.

Will put the other 5 panels together tomorrow and see if they have the same error. If so will probably go ahead anyway and end up with a boat 10mm shorter than original plans. If not will have to work out what is wrong with this #1 panel and or stretch it 5 mm at the two joins to bring it up to scratch. Hoping that it may just be a fudge error in the printing of the full size plan drawings.

Any other ideas greatly appreciated.

Am helping a mate build a Freedom 15 from full size plans as well and the first panel was 25-30 mm too long. He had emailed Matt about the delay in arrival of plans to be advised that there were some printing problems causing a delay, ergo the thought that it may be a printing error. We will QA1 and QA2 check them all tomorrow as well.

Have cut out all the frames from 6 mm MDF.

if the 10mm occurance is consistant, proceed.

That's the risk of paper patterns.... shrinkage of the paper! I've looked into printing on mylar film but the cost gets crazy.

Measured them all, are between 12 and 10 mm too short. The 12 mm was probably more an issue of not enough stretch in laying out the paper. So will go with a boat that's about 10 mm short. May have to put and extra strip front and back on the Bow/stern protector.

Doug's Freedom 15 panels were all about 20-21 mm too long so we shortened them to the QA2 measurements and will go with that. Panel halves seem to be right on the width axis, but they were all about 10 mm too long. they all seem okay now, so we will go with that as well.

To Ron, Darrel, Matt or anyone who may know,

A couple of questions.
1. I plan to glue the panels together much like Ron SS&G Northwind and imagine that the frames will be needing to be trimmed as internals of hull may be diminished. If this is so, roughly by how much and is this on all faces of the frames.

2. I see I think it was that Darrel was talking about filling gaps etc in the hull of his strip Freedom with 'Goopie' mixed with wood flour. I got the impression he was not talking about glue: as in fibreglass resin and wood flour. So could someone clarify what the term 'Goopie' refers to.

Will much appreciate answers to these queries. Thanks in advance.

I didnt have to trim mine ,the frames.
It really depends on how precise you cut your strips. Just relax and enjoy the process ,Matts plans are good .
Goopie is wood flour and epoxy mixed to a peanut butter consistancy ,you will use it to cover every seam inside and out.

Thought gluing the panels together, especially as there would be no gap between them like the normal stitch and glue method, may have caused a problem. Being a pedantic old fart, I like to keep ahead of the game. Your right of course, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
There are enough problems in life without going looking for more.

Re: the Goopie, thought you blokes may have had a secret weapon up your sleeves. Had initially planed to use Goopie as you call it for the job.

Have no issues with the quality of Matt's plans. His support in answering questions has been excellent as well.
