JEM Watercraft

From what I understand I should use multiple coats of resin to completely fill the weave of the cloth. Is this for practical reasons or aesthetics? I am going to paint and I actually like the idea of a hint of weave showing through to look a little like painted canvas

Aesthetics and also move better through the water and won't grab on rocks and logs as easy as a rough surface.
