Kiwi Sabalo.

Post by Sudz »

Lock down has motivated me to dust off an old project so out came the Sabalo plans.

Partly I've posted this to commit myself to seeing this through. Anyway, the side panels are cut and the sanding has begun.

Good move Sudz. Sabalo is a nice fishing craft and you're getting something positive out of a bad situation.

Keep posting progress photos and ask questions if you have any difficulty. Things are quiet on most forums these days but there are still a few people around to help out with comments and advice.
Cheers, Bob

Awesome cheers Bob. I'm sure I will need to lean on some seasoned builders at some point.

Gaboon. I got it a while ago when I first looked at starting the project in 2015  But then we had children and it's been shelved ever since. NZ is now in lockdown so with time to kill I've caught the bug again.

Really keen to install a mirage drive on this one so I think I'll be fishing for advice at some point!

Finished cutting and sanding the hull sections today and then laid them out to get a sense of the Sabalo.

I've ordered some fiberglassing gear and when that arrives we will be ready to join the hull sections together. :D

Some good progress there and it's looking good.

When setting up the half panels for doing the butt joints check the layout carefully against the drawing. About the time I was doing my laker some people had the panels at the wrong angle so even thought the QA check gave right number the panels were joined incorrectly. Can't remember the exact details but I think the tape measure should have passed over the panels when measuring from bow to stern but it was possible to set it up so the tape was off the panels between the ends. That may have been a quirk with the laker design - it has only 1 side panel - but just check that the tape measure is in the correct position in relation to the panels.

Cool, thanks for the heads up Bob, definitely reassuring having a bit of oversight from other builders.

Still waiting for fiberglass kit so to kill the time I will start mocking up the cockpit and tank well. Will hopefully have more progress to report soon.

Hey Cowbro,

Yeah a little, I have started piecing together the cockpit and tank well frames. Once I've done that I need to have some serious thought on creating space in the garage to bond the hull sections together.

We are starting to come out of lockdown here in NZ so I need to start making good use of my evenings to keep things ticking over.

Cheers.
