Laker Plans and Profile View

Check out the reviews of the Laker 13 on this page.

This kayak is designed to be very simple and economical kayak to build yet perform nicely for recreational paddling or light touring. Except for the deck, the hull is symmetrical (same shape forward and aft) which will save on build time and material. There are no sharp panel bends or twists, making it easier to build a straight and true hull.

Bill of Materials

Plywood:

3 sheets total

Epoxy Resin (With 15% waste factor)

1.5 gallons (5.7 L)

Fiberglass Tape: 50 yards (46 M)
Wood Flour 1 quart (1 L)

Cost:

Cost to build range from about $225 for a basic hull to $600 for an ultra tough, precision machined, very lightweight version.

Review our kits to compare how costs meet your desires. The Laker Kayak is easy enough for a beginner builder to draw and cut them selves. A builder who chooses to draw and cut out all the panels by hand can save around $240 over the cost of CNC kit.

However, if you want the best materials and they are not available in your local area, then the precut kit might be worth considering.

Labor:

The hull will required about 40-55 hours to complete. You can save about 4-8 hours with a precut kit. These times are rough estimates and will vary according to the skill of the builder. Please note these are "hands on" hours and do not include the time waiting for epoxy to cure.
