Re: Wood Flour
Not to side step what Matt posted ........ BUT.
When you saw the wood out the fine sawdust from that can be used as the wood flour since it is nothing more then sifted and really fine sawdust. It just depends on what boat you are making and how much sawing and sanding is needed to complete the project.
If you have to purchase some then try to get it from the same shade or type of wood that you are using , or a darker wood if you want the fillets to be accented. Lighter wood does the same thing but in reverse. There are other things you can do to lighten it but we can go there later.

Re: Wood Flour
Very true. If you sift your saw dust and it's clean and pure (no paint or glue remnants), that can be used.

Re: Wood Flour
I got a sack of it from a furniture factory. It needed to be shifted but that about it.
Last month, I had the builder I'm helping use an angle grinder with an sanding disk to make some. It took awhile but he eventually got the amount he needed. This was before we made friends with the furniture factory.
Another source is floor installation contractors.
Matt, are there any dos and don'ts with these sources of wood flour?

Re: Wood Flour
I got some from a cabinet shop for free. He said I could have a 50 gallon drum about once a month if I would take it away!
Just make sure it's a fine dust/powder and that it's wood only and no finishing material mixed in.

Re: Wood Flour
Laid a laminate floor for someone today and had lots of laminate dust from cutting but I figured I had better not use that because i was also cutting through the padding that was applied and that has glues and etc in it. Plus with the particle type wood they use for those it wouldnt be a great idea.
I am going to take you up on your ideas for the woodworking places. Thanks for the replies all!

Re: Wood Flour
I make more on every boat I make than I can use. I just empty the little bag on my random orbital sander and pass it through a piece of old screen. I have developed a huge surplus. Some pine from my strip built boats and a mix of cedar and okoume from the strip and stitch -n-glue boats. The screened dust from the random orbital sander is about as fine as flour. It makes nice, smooth, consistent fillets.

Re: Wood Flour
I stopped in to Home Depot and asked the guy who cuts the wood for them. He opened a container that was the coolection point for the built in vacuum. It was filled with sifted sawdust. I told him what I needed it for and he filled up a brown paper sack for me for free. We will see how it works.
Was already sifted too because there is an internal filter in the vacuum that sifted all the big pieces out of it. Its a very fine dust too. Any comments or suggestions on this way?? If it seems ok, theres another source for those in need of it.
